Babycakes vs. Cupcake a la Mode, Kansas City

April 23, 2009

In a cute story by reporter Lisa Gutierrez, two Kansas City cupcakeries are compared and contrasted by their cupcake personalities. Like any beauty contest, each contestant struts her stuff with her own brand of sass and attitude.

“Sophia” aptly describes a sweet treat from Cupcake a la Mode. This is one high maintenance cupcake like the women from Sex and the City. Stepping out in Betsey Johnson and stilettos, Sophia’s digs are trendy and stylish in pink. This cupcake has a frosting menu in a multitude of flavors as varied as the shoes in Carrie Bradshaw’s closet. Chocolate or vanilla cake is topped off with unique tastes like maple cinnamon (Stuffed French Toast), raspberry and lemon buttercream (Raspberry Lemonade) and peanut butter and chocolate buttercream swirl (Peanut Butter Kiss.) Cupcake a la Mode is the place to shop until you drop while you eat your cupcake.

On the other end of the spectrum, Cupcake “Sydney” is the epitome of independence and confidence in “Chuck Taylors, jeans and snug-fitting T-shirts.” This classic cupcake doesn’t dress to impress. Six standard cake flavors like chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, carrot. lemon and strawberry are topped off with yummy flavors like chocolate mint, peanut butter and dulce de leche. Babycakes is for the girl on the go. This is a cupcakery, where cupcakes and not retail take centerstage.

So, which cupcake are you? Sophia or Sydney?
