U.K. Health Campaign Labels Cupcakes Deadly
The British Department of Health has created a new ad campaign, which includes the referenced photo of a young normal sized girl eating a “fairy cake” or cupcake as it is known in the U.S. The caption of the photo reads, “Is a premature death so tempting?”
“Demonising foods like fairy cakes, which are fun to make at home, is a bit counterproductive and we risk giving children complexes about food.”
Not surprisingly, it has caused outrage from parents, medical providers and the cooking industry. Parents fear the scare tactics of the campaign will trigger eating disorders of teenage girls. The government countered that obesity costs the British taxpayers £4.2 billion a year from related diabetes and heart ailments, which are co-morbidities of the obese.
