The 3/29/09 L.A. Cupcake Challenge is Heating Up!
The Guide section of today’s L.A. Times focuses on Precious McCall, an entrant in this year’s L.A. Cupcake Challenge. She intends to enter her signature cupcake, The Paradise, (pineapple cream with coconut and pistachio) in this year’s competion along with Blackberries & Cream and Casanova’s Kiss, a cupcake inspired by her favorite chocolate-hazelnut and pistachio gelato. Last year McCall’s business, Sugar Jones took home the prize of best original cupcake. Looks like it could get ugly. McCall is no marshmallow when it comes to a bake-off.
This year 19 bakers and cupcakeries will enter 34 different kinds of cupcakes into the competition hoping to impress the judges with their selections.
But the competition too is stepping up with such creations as the Chocolate Malted Milkshake from Delilah Bakery, Blood Orange Mango Creamsicle and Mexican Hot Chocolate from Layers, Lavender from Melli Belli Desserts, Chocolate Bread Pudding from the chefs of the Oinkster and Boho, Sweet Potato Pie from Southern Girl Desserts and a Lemon-Blueberry-Mascarpone cupcake from the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel, which is hosting the event.
This year the power of the people will have more say in who takes home the top prizes. The judges, including Tara, a well known cupcake affectionado and blogger of When Tara Met Blog, Gustavo Arellano of the OC Weekly, Lindsay William-Ross of LAist.com and others will have reduced voting power from last year in selecting the best cupcake awards.
A favorite O.C. Cupcake Baker, Two Parts Sugar of Mission Viejo is also entered in the competition. Best of luck Team Monica!
